# How do I use the Financials tab in a nonprofit profile?

## The Financials tab shows a nonprofit's financial picture over time, using data from the organization's public IRS 990 filings. Here's how to get the most out of it.

The Financials tab shows a nonprofit's financial picture over time, using data from the organization's public IRS 990 filings. Here's how to get the most out of it.

### **View year-over-year charts**

No matter what type of account you have, you can see two charts at the top of the tab:

- **Revenue & Expenses** — total revenue compared to total expenses for each filing year
- **Assets & Liabilities** — total assets compared to total liabilities for each filing year

You can toggle between the chart view and a table view. The table shows exact figures, plus year-over-year growth percentages for revenue and expenses.

### **Focus on a single year**

Click any year — on a chart bar or a table row — and the rest of the page updates to show that year's details, including headline totals for revenue, expenses, and net gain or loss.

### **Go deeper with Giving Compass Pro**

With a Pro account, selecting a year also shows you:

- **Months of Cash** — roughly how long the organization could operate on its cash reserves if new revenue stopped. A commonly cited healthy range is around 3–6 months.
- **Operating Results** — whether everyday revenue covered everyday costs that year (an operating surplus or deficit).
- **Net Assets by Restriction** — how much of the organization's net assets are unrestricted (spendable on any purpose) versus donor-restricted.
- **Filing Detail** — the full line-by-line 990, plus the filed tax-return documents.

### **Data Sources and Freshness**

Figures come straight from the organization's 990 filings. When an organization amends a past filing, we show the corrected numbers, so a figure may differ from an older copy of the filing.
